Practical tips
Almost no shade all day: wear sun protection. Services in Azofra, at the Rioja Alta golf club bar and in Cirueña (300 m off route). Long detour possible to the San Millán monasteries.

Santo Domingo de la Calzada
A live hen and rooster are kept inside the cathedral. They recall the legend of a young pilgrim falsely accused and hanged, who was found alive; when the judge scoffed that the boy was as alive as the roast chicken on his plate, the bird stood up and crowed. The town is named after the 11th-century saint who built a bridge, road and hospital for pilgrims.
