Practical tips
No fountains between Navarrete and Nájera, the longest stretch without services. Summer heat can be intense. In Navarrete, take the road rather than the stairs.
Along the way

Navarrete
A wine and pottery town with a striking Baroque altarpiece. Along the motorway fence, pilgrims weave small crosses from sticks.

Vineyards of La Rioja
The path runs between Tempranillo vines, especially beautiful at harvest time in September and October.

Nájera
Once capital of the Kingdom of Navarra. The monastery of Santa María la Real was built over a cave where, legend says, King García found a statue of the Virgin in 1044. It holds a royal pantheon.
