Stage 2: Roncesvalles to Zubiri

From
Roncesvalles
To
Zubiri
Distance
21.4 km
Climb
↑ 310 m
Descent
↓ 732 m
Difficulty
Moderate

A gentle start through beech woods and Basque villages, then a stony and steep descent from the Alto de Erro.

Practical tips

Fill your bottles before Lintzoain: the last 8 km to Zubiri have no services, and a steep climb starts right after it. The rocky descents are slippery when wet; after heavy rain the N-135 road is an option, walked with great care.

Zubiri

Its name means 'village of the bridge' in Basque. The medieval Puente de la Rabia earned its name from a legend: farmers walked their animals around its central pillar to protect them from rabies.
