What to Pack for the Camino de Santiago: Full Checklist
Packing light is the single biggest lever you have over how much you enjoy the Camino, and most first-timers still bring far more than they need.
The weight rule
Aim for a loaded backpack no heavier than about 10% of your body weight. In practice that usually means a total pack weight of 6-8 kg once water and snacks are included.
Backpack size
A 30-40 litre pack is the sweet spot for most pilgrims: large enough for essentials without tempting you to fill it with things you won't use.
Clothing essentials
Two to three quick-dry shirts, one warm mid-layer, a rain jacket or poncho, two pairs of hiking socks plus liner socks to fight blisters, broken-in trail shoes or boots, and a single change of evening clothes for albergues.
Gear that earns its weight
Trekking poles, a basic first-aid and blister kit, a lightweight sleeping bag liner, a quick-dry towel, a universal adapter, and a phone with an offline Camino app or guidebook.
What to leave at home
Extra shoes, a second full outfit "just in case," full-size toiletries, and heavy guidebooks; nearly everything you forget can be bought in a pharmacy or shop along the route.
