Camino de Santiago: How Much Does It Really Cost, Day by Day

Walking the Camino de Santiago is never free, but it is far cheaper than most first-timers expect. Based on 2025-2026 prices along the French Way and English Way, most budget pilgrims spend between €30 and €45 a day, while those wanting private rooms and restaurant meals spend €60-€90.

Accommodation

Municipal and parish albergues (hostels) run €8-€12 a night for a bunk. Private albergues cost €15-€22 and usually include better bathrooms and kitchens. A private room for two in a pilgrim-friendly guesthouse runs €35-€55.

Food

The pilgrim's menu (menú del día) is the backbone of Camino eating: €12-€15 for three courses, bread and wine. Breakfast in a café is €3-€5. If you self-cater in albergue kitchens with supermarket groceries, you can eat well on €8-€10 a day.

Other costs

Budget €5-€10 a day for drinks, blister supplies and souvenirs. The credencial (pilgrim passport) costs €1-€2, and the Compostela certificate itself is free at the Pilgrim Office, though a tubular case to protect it costs a few euros more.

Sample daily budget

Albergue bunk €12, breakfast €4, lunch menú €13, dinner snack €6, water and extras €5 — a realistic total of about €40 a day, or roughly €1,200 for a full month on the Camino Francés.
