Best Time of Year to Walk the Camino de Santiago

Timing your Camino well changes the whole experience: the same route can feel like a social festival or a muddy slog depending on the month you choose.

Best overall: May, June and September

These months consistently get the highest marks from pilgrims: mild temperatures, manageable rainfall, and strong services with albergues fully open, but without the full intensity of peak summer crowds.

Peak season: July and August

The busiest and often hottest months, especially on the Meseta section of the Camino Francés where temperatures can soar. Albergues fill up fast and reservations for private options are wise, but the social atmosphere is at its liveliest.

Shoulder season: April and October

A good compromise with fewer crowds than peak summer and gentler prices, though April can still bring spring rain and October evenings turn cool, especially in Galicia.

Winter: November through March

Quiet and atmospheric but demanding: many municipal albergues close, daylight hours shrink, and mountain sections on routes like the Francés can close due to snow. The Camino Inglés, being shorter and lower-altitude, stays walkable year-round.

Our take

If you can only choose one window, aim for the first half of June or the second half of September: the sweet spot between good weather and manageable crowds on almost every route.
