Luggage Transfer on the Camino: How Backpack Transport Works

You do not have to carry everything on your back. On all the main routes, transport services will move your bag each morning to your next night's accommodation, so you walk with just a light daypack.

How it works

You book the service online or by phone, usually by the evening before. In the morning you leave your bag at reception with a label showing your name, phone number and the next address. When you arrive, your bag is waiting for you.

Who offers it

The Spanish postal service, Correos, runs a well-known pilgrim service called Paq Mochila on the main routes, and there are many private companies, often recommended by albergues and guesthouses. Prices are usually a few euros per bag per stage, with cheaper packs if you book the whole route.

Things to check

Each service has a weight limit per bag. Some public albergues do not accept delivered bags, and they cannot be booked ahead, so it is easiest to send your bag to private albergues, guesthouses or hotels. Keep your documents, medicines, water, rain gear and valuables in your daypack.

Does it affect the Compostela?

No. What counts is that you walk the distance and collect your stamps, not who carries your bag.

When it makes sense

It is a big help if you have back or knee problems, on mountain stages, or for a few days when you feel tired. Many pilgrims use it only for the hardest stages and carry their pack the rest of the time.
