Camino Portugués Coastal Route: A Complete Guide
The coastal variant of the Camino Portugués follows the Atlantic from Porto into Galicia. It is longer and a little more remote than the central route, but many pilgrims say it is the most beautiful way to reach Santiago.
The route in brief
From Porto the path heads north along the shore through Matosinhos, Vila do Conde, Póvoa de Varzim, Esposende and Viana do Castelo to Caminha, at the mouth of the Miño. You cross the river into Spain at A Guarda, then continue past Oia and Baiona to Vigo. At Redondela the coastal route joins the central route for the last stages through Pontevedra, Caldas de Reis and Padrón. In total it is roughly 260-280 km, usually walked in 12 to 14 days.
What it is like to walk
Long sections run on wooden boardwalks (the Senda Litoral) and seaside promenades, with beaches, fishing villages and lighthouses along the way. It is flatter than the central route, but the sea wind can be tiring, and there is less shade.
Crossing the Miño
There is no bridge between Caminha and A Guarda. Pilgrims cross by a small ferry or by local boat services, whose timetables depend on the season and the tide, so check the day before. If no boat is running, you can walk inland to the bridge at Vila Nova de Cerveira or take a taxi.
Coastal or central?
Choose the coast for sea views, beaches and a quieter path. Choose the central route if you want more albergues, more history in the towns, and shorter distances between services. Both meet at Redondela, so the final days are the same.
Practical tips
Bring sun cream and a windproof layer even in summer, and plan where you will sleep in the smaller villages north of Viana do Castelo, where beds are fewer.
