Camino Francés vs. Camino Inglés: Which One to Choose
The Camino Francés and Camino Inglés sit at opposite ends of the Camino experience, and the right choice depends mostly on how much time you have and what you're looking for.
Length and time
The full Camino Francés from Saint-Jean-Pied-de-Port runs about 775 km, roughly five weeks of walking. The Camino Inglés from Ferrol is only about 118 km, doable comfortably in five to six days while still qualifying for the Compostela.
Crowds and atmosphere
The Francés is the classic, social Camino: about 70% of all pilgrims walk some part of it, meaning packed albergues in peak season but also a strong communal atmosphere. The Inglés is far quieter, with around 15,000 walkers a year, better suited to those seeking solitude.
Scenery and difficulty
The Francés crosses the Pyrenees, the plains of Castilla, and vineyard country, with genuinely varied and occasionally demanding terrain. The Inglés is gentler and shorter daily stages through Galician forest and farmland, with one notably long first stage from Ferrol or A Coruña.
Which to choose
Pick the Francés for the full pilgrim culture and a month-long adventure; pick the Inglés if you have a week or less, want fewer crowds, or are using the Camino as an introduction before attempting a longer route later.
